About Us
Semaphore is a not-for-profit publication run by a skeleton staff of one on volunteer time. That is, I generally find working on it a good way to procrastinate from our various other duties, and then fail to pay myself for the pleasure.
For the purposes of this introduction, "I" am Marie Hodgkinson, and I began working on Semaphore on something of a whim in late August, 2007. Three years on I am proud to edit New Zealand's only regular paying magazine dedicated to publishing speculative short fiction, and plan to keep doing so for the foreseeable future.
Though Semaphore does not have a mission statement as such, if I were to give words to any particular goals I have for this magazine, it would be that it provides a forum to showcase stories that represent a diversity of worlds, lives, and experiences. If that diversity hails from New Zealand, all the better!
If you would like to support Semaphore, there are a few things you can do. Apart from donations, our main source of income is from sale of the annual Anthologies; you can score a book and prop up our finances at the same time. But you can also help us immensely by spreading the word, telling people about us and urging (encouraging, inviting, blackmailing) them to come and have a look, whether they're readers, writers, or both.
