About Us

Semaphore is a not-for-profit publication run by a skeleton staff of two on volunteer time. That is, the Editor, Marie Hodgkinson, generally finds working on Semaphore to be a good way to procrastinate from her various other duties, and then fails to pay herself for the pleasure, while happily leaving the gruntiest of the grunt work to her lovely slush-reader Kirsty Lock.

Semaphore Magazine has existed since late August, 2007, when Marie began work on it on something of a whim. Three years on she is proud to edit New Zealand's only regular paying magazine dedicated to publishing speculative short fiction, and plans to keep doing so for the foreseeable future.

Though Semaphore does not have a mission statement as such, if Marie were to give words to any particular goals she hasfor this magazine, it would be that it provides a forum to showcase stories that represent a diversity of worlds, lives, and experiences. If that diversity hails from New Zealand, all the better!

Support Semaphore

If you would like to support Semaphore, there are a few things you can do. First: read! Second: let us know what you think! If you're struck by a particular story or poem, or want to see more of a particular genre or theme, send Marie an email and tell her.

If you'd like your support to be of the financial as well as moral kind, read on. Semaphore accepts donations through PayPal (see button below), which it uses to pay contributors for their work.

Finally, there's a way for you to show your support and get something for it: buy a copy of one of the Semaphore books at our Felt.co.nz shop.
